MY RUSSIAN JOURNEY

Santha Rama Rau has proved herself an apt interpreter of East to West, and particularly popular with young adults. Here, again, in the role of observer and interpreter, she shares her impressions of Russia, which she and her husband entered as tourists. They pushed the ministrations of Intourist aside, for the most part, and approached the people in Leningrad, in Moscow- turning acquaintances into friends, discovering the lives of theatre people, students, the privileged and the workers. Everywhere they found clues to the lives of the Russians. They visited Uzbekistan, Tashkent, Samarkand, and as they turned homeward, they felt- and the reader, with them, that they had had a joyous sense of encounter and brought a far country closer.
