MOVING TO WIN: The Physics of Sports

A sports-slanted lesson in basic physics has a potential unrealized in this tiresome effort. Chase's survey of some fundamental laws and concepts--velocity, mass, friction, acceleration--is muddled and repetitious, without a clear sense of progression via related theories. Though there might be minor interest in the current athletes--O. J. Simpson, Nadia Comaneci, Billie Jean King--who are trotted out for anecdotal illustrations, this device often degenerates into mere name-dropping: ""even a good driver, such as A. J. Foyt, can lose control if his car skids."" A final chapter of game-improving tips for readers doesn't offset the general imprecision and aimlessness.
