This is a direct little story of leadership. Gih is a husky puppy, one of a litter of five. Fred Machetanz, the illustrator, has used a stipple technique in sepia, lithograph black and blue to show the pups tottering about, then learning to pull the sled. Although his brothers and sisters played when they were being trained as sled dogs Gih did not. He tugged at his chains and finally, although his brother Puk was stronger, Gih proved he had the will to lead. The illustrations are crisp, clean and strong with sure appeal for youngsters in the primary grades learning about Eskimos. Some second graders can read it to themselves. Unusually attractive format with distinctive pictorial style.
