High school senior Maggie Kips becomes intoxicated with her first taste of fashion work as a summer model in her own suburban community of New Paris. Her ingenious plan to awaken the potential of seven ""sleeping "" chosen at. random wins her a scholarship to a New York fashion school sponsored by Marquette's, the leading local department store. The glitter and hectic drive of Fifth and Seventh Avenues draw Maggie further into the magical realm of the fashion world. She gets experience as a salesgirl, learns the ropes of wholesale buying and learns to expect the unexpected in the ""cool"" atmosphere of the planned fashion show. As her skills and tastes develop, Maggie finds her niche in fashion copywriting and at graduation lands a job in the advertising department of Marquette's. Like so many other books in this Career series, (Wendy Scott Secretary, in particular (J-287) this gives an admirable up-to-date picture of the field in question- here there is even direct advice to the novice from fashion experts- but unfortunately at the expense of story-line. It is barely distinguishable in a flood of verbiage that rivals Pollyanna in sentimentality.
