This reissue of the 1957 text with the addition of well-chosen photographs is a good biography made more attractive to the reader. It is seldom that a scientist and his world can be shown so completely interwoven into his culture; Lavoisier, the ""father of chemistry,"" was very much the political man at the time of the French Revolution. The text compares favorably to McKie's Antoine Lavoisier and requires about the same minimal background in the physical sciences.
