NORA'S STARS

Nora comes with her dog and her toys to visit at Grandmother's house--a lovely French villa set high on a steep hill. That night, the old toys in a trunk in Nora's room come alive and take her outdoors to play; there they collect the stars to adorn her bedcover, making her a sparkling cape. They all dance and play with the stars until Nora realizes that the sky is dark and sad; she shakes them from her bedcover back to the sky. Ichikawa has made this simple embroidery on a child's imaginative play into a joyful dream. Her style is spare and graceful; the charming illustrations--lovingly portraying the old house surrounded with flowers and the charming, unusual old toys--are precise and beautifully composed. Very nice indeed.
