UFO DIARY

The voice here is of the unseen navigator of a yellow, mushroom-cap-shaped space ship. ""On Monday, I took a wrong turn in the Milky Way,"" it begins. As shown in succeeding double, spread illustrations, it approaches earth, coming down near a small boy in a large green field. They smile and become friends; ""he showed me around and introduced me to his relations"" (wildlife, not human). The boy gets a ride in the space ship; the narrator is given a souvenir dandelion to plant; they part. Kitamura's detailed, serene pen-and-watercolor illustrations celebrate the beauty of earth and the vast space around it. A satisying encounter that leaves a pleasant, lingering sense of mystery.
