In general, cats hate baths, and Boots will do anything to avoid a scrubdown. He searches for a good hiding place, but the cupboard and chair don't offer sufficient cover. In desperation, he leaps into the bathtub to hideliterally finding himself in hot water. Boots is a funny looking, pyramid-eared cat whose droll expressions and simple adventures will hit home with small children. With its companion, A Friend for Boots, this one joins Kitamura's other board books (Duck Is Dirty, Cat Is Sleepy, etc., 1996) in offering some very brief but jovial outings for toddlers. Sure to prompt little fingers into joyful action.
A favorite baby-and-toddler activity receives an upbeat celebration that will get those fingers going. Watch out!
The gang of frazzled felines that populate this outing are truly the cat's meow. Based on Boynton's song of the same title, the text is reproduced in a colored, patterned font that amps the energy right up. A forlorn little kitty, paws clasped in front of his body, appears anxious (though slightly intrigued) when a trio of toms encourages him to join in the fun. “Gitchy-gitchy / Goo Gotta / Ready, Set, Go!” It doesn't take long before the cautious cat jumps in on this chorus line with dramatic leaps and fluttering fingers. A little birdie acts as a square-dance caller, enunciating each beat (“Goo bop. / Gitchy-goo bop”). The shaggy, large-nosed felines are tremendously expressive in their synchronized movements and maintain a rollicking pace. “We can tickle high. / We can tickle low. / We can tickle QUICKQUICKQUICK / as fast as we can go!” (Here, the page is filled with iterations of "gitchy gitchy gitchy" in different colors.) At the end, the gang sprawls on the floor, exhausted, after a truly monumental tickle-fest.

Family Time ($4.99; May 1996; 22 pp.; 0-689-80051-7): Although this Super Chubby series entry is sturdy and wholly cheerful with photograph after full-color photograph of two or more members of a family sharing a moment, the overall theme is a little loose for the literal-minded toddlers at which it's aimed. While ``Cooking with our aunt'' and ``Visiting with Grandpa'' crisply fit the bill, ``Sliding by myself'' and ``Smiling'' have the look of random choices. If the point is that all one needs for family time is at least one relative, adults will have to spell it out for the children looking at these. (Board book. 2-3)
