Martha Albrand's novelette (one of two in this anthology) Reunion with Terror, about a Russian agent's almost perfect impersonation of a gentle Bavarian Professor who has supposedly escaped from Russia and is returned to his former position as head of security, sets the high standard for this collection. The baker's dozen ranges from the gothic grotesque of Poe's The Black Cat to the contemporary macabre of Shirley Jackson's The Possibility of Evil to the worldly whimsy of Gerald Kersh's The Woman Who Wouldn't Stay Dead. Agatha Christie, Philip Wylie, even William Faulkner (no mean hand in the mystery department) also contribute. The only thing missing is a creaking door.
