DIBBLE AND DABBLE

Seeing a furry tail sticking out from behind the reeds, two ducks conclude that it's a snake. Like Chicken Little, they tell their story and collect a growing parade of other waterside beasts--vole, frog, fish, crane, etc.--until a boy, with more sense, takes them back to the awful scene, where a cat is revealed. The vibrant illustrations are the outstanding feature here: gorgeous van Gogh colors, dappled and swirled onto the page; the animals simply formed but precisely observed; neatly economical drawings on text pages contrasting with the full-color paintings opposite. Certain to please toddlers and preschoolers.
