THE MAGIC PENCIL

First Scapa makes step-by-step drawings of little Simon and bearded, top-hatted Toby, and then he has the two of them draw their way, with a magic pencil, through an object-crammed week that turns out to be just one dumb picture after another. On Monday they draw a tree, then a hammock tied to it, but when Simon gets tired of holding the other end, the hammock with Toby in it falls. (""OH!! OH!!!"") On Tuesday they make a tall house (it looks more like a pile of flat blocks), on Wednesday people (25 of them, simply lined up and labeled on the page), and so on through day seven. But with neither the wit of Crockett Johnson's Harold (not to mention the charm) nor even the instant drawing lessons of Ed Emberley, Scapa's crass cartoons and nonexistent story line won't draw much of an audience.
