THE TROUBLE WITH DIAMONDS

An enjoyable piece of summer-weight detection, this begins with Jeff applying for a summer job at an inn and tackling a fat man he finds climbing through a cabin window. The man turns out to be Mr. Bunker, owner of the inn and cabins; but the two hit it off and Jeff is hired. He is also charged with watching Mr. Wolfe, the cabin's tenant, whom mystery reader Bunker suspects of designs on another guest's diamond necklace. A third guest arrives and Jeff suspects him of being in cahoots with Wolfe, but Bunker doesn't. (Guess who's right.) At a local estate auction there are some Rembrandt copies that have attracted a museum curator's interest and now it seems that the two visitors are out to steal an original Rembrandt, never mind the diamonds. By now Corbett must be able to turn this stuff out in his sleep; but that's okay because it is always neatly plotted and as clever as the many spur-of-the-moment stories Jeff cooks up to cover his investigative tracks.
