The ups and downs, ins and outs (of cash- mostly) of starting up a small home business as The Reluctant Landlord (1950) tells of his attempts to put over- commercially- a Chinese sauce for fish and chicken. The purchasing of the ingredients- in large quantities; the selection of the right jar, the right label, and the right name; getting past the Government regulations and hitting the stores; the big buildup for their debut in Clementine Paddleford's column, and a post ipso facto discovery of a mistake on the label; the unreceptivity of stores and buyers in spite of Clementine and in spite of personal demonstrations, and a last minute discovery of a public for their product in Chinatown.... An offbeat, offhand reminiscence of very minor proportions- for a market which may well be as modest.
