DEMOCRACY IS NOT ENOUGH by Scott Nearing

DEMOCRACY IS NOT ENOUGH

By

Publisher: Island Workshop

Arbitrary and somewhat contentious discussion of democracy or rather lack of democracy in terms of economic privilege -- which, though there is no question of the validity of his attack on economic monopoly and inequality, does not justify his reduction of the entire world scene to this one evil. How privilege has become entrenched in our present form of monopoly capitalism; how after 1910 there has been mass unrest, resulting in the managed economics of Germany and Japan -- and here in the ""equally totalitarian Now Deal""; how war was the only way to maintain the system of privilege -- and this war the result of the conflict between ""democracy and black reaction""; how we must now reassert political democracy, obviate the ruling classes and establish majority rule, have real leadership, exercise certain democratic disciplines, and so on. Over simplification which borders on eyewash -- though possibly well-intentioned.
