This is a comparable companion volume to the 900 page plus The U.S. Navy in World War II (1966). Again a whopping variety of collector's item compilations for the semper fidelis. In largely firsthand accounts by Corpsmen minor and major plus correspondents and other commentators, it follows the course of Marine action in hard-fought battles from ""Wake: The Enemy Strikes"" to ""Surrender at Tsingtao."" In between the contributors convey their experiences from boot camp to Japanese POW camp. Editor Smith does a competent job of tying it all together; he sets the scene for each piece and introduces the writer. Some of those who probably need no introduction: Gen. MacArthur, Clark Lee, Hanson W. Baldwin, Walter Lord, Richard Tregaskis, Robert Leckie, John Hersey, Burke Davis, and Ernie Pyle.
