In addition to the description of armor from the days of the ancient Sumerians to the present, the author includes much background information on the armies that wore (and wear) it. The effect of climate and terrain on the types of armor that could be worn with comfort and produced with economy is a bonus review of geography. That man's faculty for inventing and using tools is always stimulated by destructive war comes across as a natural part of a smoothly written text and constitutes a survey of developments in metals and mechanics. The kinds of battle in which the various types of armor were used are described and troop movements outlined. The author always presents the effects of armor on the individual soldier and then goes on to show how the innovations in armor allowed innovations in battle strategy. The author's 90 odd pen and ink drawings complement and complete the text.
