ROSE AND CROWN by Sean O'Casey

ROSE AND CROWN

The successor to Inishfallen Fare Thee Well and fifth of the noted playwright's autobiographical books, this proceeds in a less political and more personal tone. Within its compass come the years of the O'Caseys in London; meetings with many prominent figures who weave in and out of his story -- Beverly Nichols, Bernard Shaw, Ramsey MacDonald among them; the lengthy opposition of Yeats, otherwise admired, to his war play, The Silver Tassie; the move to the country; Sean's visit to America to produce Within The Gates, which met foss in the Catholic church; and his turn homeward. For the literateurs, this ripe and poetic rumination may have the taste of mellow grapes in press.
