KIRKUS REVIEW

Here is one of history's truly great adventure tales -- the first circumnavigation of the globe by Magellan's men -- dramatically narrated by Seymour Gates Pond. After subduing a mutiny off South America where the rebels controlled three of his five ships, Magellan went on to discover the straits which bear his name, the ocean which he named Pacific, the islands which he named Philippines (pines of Philip), and the constellation shaped like the holy cross which he named Southern Cross. In press worthy of the odyssey he describes, Mr. Pond brings the expedition back to Spain in 1522 three years after its inception with 19 survivors out of 267 and one ship out of five.
