A rather indifferent novel about Roy Donoghue, a professional fund-raiser, who-originally intending to devote his life to doing good- now finds that he does very well (he makes a handsome living) at the expense of higher values. ""A promoter in human misery"", he is the district organizer for Wellville, a ""nonprofit"" hospital formerly for tuberculars, now hoping to fill empty beds with cancer and heart victims. In the course of a campaign here, the presentation of the ""Man of the Year"" award to an anything but deserving motor magnate, Roy sees much of the hypocrisy in organized charity- and in himself, but the love of a good woman does not help him to turn down an even more lucrative future... The commercial approach does not apply only to Roy- and to public philanthropy.
