THE YOUNGEST CONQUISTADOR

Interest is split between the fictional story of Pablo and his brother, Juan, and their adventures with the conquistador, Cortes- and the factual record of a erciless and ambitious conquest that wiped out Tlaxcalan and Aztec tribes in Mexico- to add to Spain's dominions. The pattern is a familiar one:- Ronald Syme's Cortes of Mexico (1951-Morrow) and Helen Lobdell's Golden Conqueror (Houghton- 1953) have produced the best for the eight to eleven age group; the Mantel is intended for junior high, and high, and cuts more deeply into motivation and the forces involved, although the plot is contrived and the fictional characters two-dimensional.
