Basketmaking beginners will take to these varied projects, introduced in accessible, instructive terms. De Leon's definition of basketry is broad enough to include more than simple containers--there's a dandy hammock--and the techniques extend beyond coiling and twining to plaiting, knotting, and netting. The directions are fine for timid beginners yet won't stifle the impulses of bolder Fingers, and the final products can easily satisfy a range of tastes--fundamental indian and splint baskets, a standard jute plant hanger, grosgrain ribbon or leather envelopes, a knotless netting bag worked in rug wool, and novel, pliant fish bags which encourage experimentation in shaping and spacing.
