KIRKUS REVIEW

A kidnapping may be payback for past deeds.

In an effort to support her young son, ex-cop and widow Vicky Langford is working as a reporter specializing in crime. Vicky’s husband was killed in the line of duty, and she quit the force when she accidentally killed a passerby at a robbery scene. These days she’s constantly trying to find proof that will take down Richard Blackwell, the man she blames for a crime spree—and her husband’s death—despite the lack of evidence. Threatening phone calls are prelude to attacks on her home and, finally, the kidnapping of her son. Meanwhile, Vicky and new-to-the-force Detective Jim McCann are attracted to each other, but a distraught Vicky is not sure she can trust him. There are too many people in Vicky’s past who have reason to hate her. She must deduce which of them is the Dark Man she fears before his threats to kill her and her child become reality.

Despite the escalating violence, this tale of hate, revenge and madness lacks tension.
