The difficult marginal line between reading aloud to children and conveying the impression of telling the story is a problem parents and librarians and teachers all face. The intent here is to present a collection of stories especially tailored to the acquisition of this technique. Folk tales from many countries and some original and contemporary stories are included, but the handling of the material, with comments addressed to young listeners injected, seems artificial and stilted, and takes from the time-honored popularity of such favorites as Rumpelstiltskin, Aladdin, the Lion and the Mouse, etc. The use of line drawings alone- as a deliberate departure from the attention diverting plethora of color and half tone usually provided -- is another somewhat controversial factor. This book does not seem to be quite right for either children or adults.
