THE ART OF THE ESKIMO

Pub Date: Sept. 23rd, 1964

Announcing a new title in the author's series of beginners' art books: Shirley Glubok affords the same coverage to Eskimo art as she did to The Art of the North American Indian (1964, p. 6, J-6). The traditional materials employed by Eskimos include skins, bone, ivory and stone. With a minimum of descriptive text and many large, clear photographs, Miss Glubok introduces the philosophies that guide the Eskimo artist -- the masks of shamans and their significance, the small figures of huntsmen and their quarries suggested to the artists by the shape of the material and customarily completed on the day they are begun. Bands of color are cleverly used to highlight the pictures. The books in this series are as at home in adult collections as they are useful to children.
