KIRKUS REVIEW

Nearly as splendid as Flowers in Design (1977), this collection offers elegant adaptations of designs from the East. From China: a needlepoint pillow taken from a cartouche of Boy Riding Ch'i-lin, a different pattern for each outside corner. From Japan: a delicate stylized crane or the ideogram for love, another needlepoint pillow. Marein has transformed the bronze head of an Ibex into dazzling free machine stitchery and turned a Turkish sultan's tughra, or official signature, into a glorious hooked rug. These are not easy designs--Oriental designs are elaborate--although the diagrams are quite good and the instructions for adjustments clearly stated. Experienced needleworkers on the lookout for challenge will be delighted.
