THREE NOVELS

Three complete stories -- short novels rather than long short stories. The first two are concerned with the Polish-Jewish first and second generations in America; the third is a rather sensational and not wholly convincing story of murder and the death house, again in America. Somehow the stories lack the mellowness, the richness of his European novels, and seem resultantly slighter. However, Asch has a sense of reality, his portraiture is sound, his emotional conflicts are moving.
