Though the upcoming county fair will feature a World Champion Liar's Contest, Josh McBroom declares that "hair'll grow on fish before I trifle with the truth." And, when he is persuaded to enter, he's disqualified: as Judge Honest Jim Rattlefinger puts it, "You don't seem to have the knack of departing from the honest facts." Then the McBroom younguns plant a bean in the family's superfertile soil. and the beanstalk that springs up goes rushing off down the road and through town. When McBroom dashes off to warn folks at the fair of its imminent approach, he's offered the Liar's Prize for the story; of course he has to turn it down, but when the galloping truth (in the form of the beanstalk) does catch up with the assembled fairgoers, all his youngsters get blue ribbons for growing such a whopper. And ranged if other developments don't result in a lake full of fish so hairy they need a shave before you can eat them! More honest-to-gosh, kneeslapping truth, from an old champion who shows no signs of bowing out.
