ABSTRACT AND SURREALIST by Sidney Janis

ABSTRACT AND SURREALIST

By

Publisher: Reynal & Hitchcook

A book designed as a cross section of abstract and surrealist art of the 19th and 20th centuries in America. There are 100 prints -- 10 in full color, 90 in halftone, each print with a brief interpretative comment, by its creator. Mr. Janis in his text discusses the movement as a whole, the ""scientific"" and ""realistic"" approach of this modern school, its European roots and background, and the individual artists whos works make up this schools -- abstract painters such as Stuart Davis, Vitlacil, Graham, Gorky, Matulka; surrealists such as MacIver and Gravs: exi from Europe, Ernst, Tanguy and others. The market for a book of this kind is limited to people to whom this aspect of art has appeal -- and to people in the field of art who want to have thorough grounding in this, as well as other, aspects. For them -- a suggested Christmas gift book.
