A compendium of forty one first rate stories by established authors, in which courage -- both moral and physical -- plays a starring role. Commando Charley (Jean Maccallum Sweet) singlehanded captures a German spy fresh off a U-boat. Elizabeth Ann Fails in An Examination (Dorothy Canfield Fisher) but succeeds is saving a friend from an underground trap. The Attack (Elizabeth Coatsworth) perpetrated by Indians brought out the kind of courage in one pioneer family that made these people the pride of our nation. The Hundred Dresses (Eleanor Estes) tells of a much more subtle display of courage. A young girl bitterly regrets her own cowardice in a human situation and vows to take an active stand for what she knows is right even if a secure friendship is threatened. Among the many familiar contributors to this stimulating work are Laura Ingals Wilder, Hugh B. Cave, Cornelia Meigs, Erick Berry, Lavinia Davis. A book a provocative purpose should find its way into many school and home libraries.
