HOW TO SHARPEN YOUR STUDY SKILLS

Kalina's advice on schedules, different kinds of reading, developing a memory (try repetition and association, take breaks, use flash cards) and taking notes is as reasonable as any at this level and could function as an outline for a school unit, but alone it's unlikely to be more effective than fifteen minutes with a busy, well-meaning guidance counselor. Sections on individual school subjects don't even skim the surface (on math Kalina explains that multiplication is ""actually"" addition, and division the opposite of multiplication--this in a book the publishers designate for eleven-year-olds and up); the library chapter merely points out that there are such things as Dewey decimal numbers and reference books (no particular ones are listed); and surely no one who really needs this will benefit from the injunction to ""be interested in what you are reading"" and, if the material doesn't suit you, ""become an actor and pretend"" to be interested.
