AT HOME WITH MUSIC

Pub Date: Oct. 18th, 1945

paeth sets out to bring everyone a sincere- and not hypocritical-- appreciation of musical beauty, written for those who are interested enough to follow his comments while listening to the actual music. He includes numerous lists -- music for children, records for a basic library, glossary of terms, plot-summaries of best-known operas, most popular works. He discusses melody, rhythmic patterns, harmony, tonal coloring, and applies the principles to the musical forms, sonata, rondo, art-song, symphony, opera. He sketches their development, makes analogies to modern popular music, analyzes classic examples. Extensive-practical-fairly obvious -- but not patronizing. Good handbook.
