An engaging treat for keen-eyed readers, Borando’s latest wordless concept book is a visual delight.

This vibrant book opens with a double-page spread of various animals in different, bright hues looking out at readers from a white background. With each page turn, the minimal background changes to a new color, transporting the animals to different environments such as a rich brown forest, bright green grasses, or cool teal water. With each change of color, an animal of the same color (almost) disappears, playfully challenging readers to determine which is hidden in each spread. Attentive readers, young and old alike, will notice not only that each animal tends to match the color of the background where it is most at home (the bear in the woods, the hippo in the water, and so on), but also that one particular animal seems to be at home in any color. In the style of Where’s Walrus?, this interactive disappearing game rewards readers’ careful observation, encouraging enthusiastic investigations of each spread and making page turns irresistible. Blending the concepts of color and camouflage with subtle humor, Borando’s continued mastery of the deceptively simple is apparent even in her cover art, as two hidden animals stand ready to draw readers into the game again and again.

Artistic simplicity and visual play spark unfettered fun in this charming little book.
