A memento, for a literary audience, in the first five chapters of reminiscences, reluctantly undertaken by a beloved English scholar -- and interrupted by his death. Gentle grace, cultivated periods, characteristic of his previous writings are evident here. Cornish progenitors and a childhood in Devon with an austere father and too generous mother; his schooling which introduced him to bullying and the Classics; Oxford, ""the one terrestrial City to which I must attain"". With his failure to make his First in Greats, his engagement to be married, and the writing of his first novel, these fragments end.
