THE CHAMBERLAIN TRADITION by Sir Charles Petrie

THE CHAMBERLAIN TRADITION

By

Publisher: Stokes

The three leading members of a famous family come in for plenty of cudos and very little discriminating commentary. Joseph, the father, first a liberal, then a conservative, fighting against Home Rule in behalf of a United Kingdom, ending as an ardent Imperialist. Then his son, Austen, the ""greatest Parliamentarian of his day"", and Foreign Secretary. Finally his half-brother, Neville, conforming to the same pattern. His viewpoint on the present situation will appeal only to those who accept the Chamberlain position at face value. He sees the war in Spain as a trial conflict between Fascism and Communism. He sees Chamberlain as a strong man, responsible for peace today. Most of the material is based on speeches, with a bit of the biographical and plenty of flowers strewn around.
