All who are familiar with Seven Pillars of Wisdom will remember Lawrence's tribute to Storrs, and this volume bears out Lawrence's estimate. A fascinating book, showing a man of extraordinary versatility and range of interests, humanness, sense of humor, understanding and love of the people of the Near East, loyalty to superiors, common sense and executive ability. As oriental secretary in Egypt, and later political officer in Mesopotamia, and then Governor of Jerusalem and of Cyprus, he was admirably equipped for the work he did during and after the war... The book gives a rich picture of crowded years and a sympathetic study of life in Cairo and Jerusalem and Cyprus, with the terrific problems the British faced. The book has many notable studies of great men, Cromer, Kitchener, Lawrence, Allenby, shot through with the wonderful flashes of humor and great scholarship. The book interlocks so closely with Lawrence's books that it is a ""must book"" to anyone who enjoyed the others. At times the style seems difficult, the excerpts from his diaries are condensed and choppy, but it is worth the hurdles. Should rank high on the list of memorable autobiographies this Fall.
