From a little story of how an Indian squaw discovered maple syrup, the approach shifts from fiction to fact as modern day methods of gathering sap, transporting it to the sugar house and processing it into maple syrup is explained. This is followed by a more general description of the North American Sugarbush, the maple sugar industry and customs surrounding sugaring time in this area. Gay illustrations by George Daly smack of the Sugarbush and enliven a straightforward factual text complete with glossary. Frances Frost's fictional series set in this same locale also conveys authentic information perhaps more palatably for youngsters. This however could be used judiciously in the Social Studies curriculum.
