She’s looking for a fortune—any fortune.
Kitty Talbot’s not like other fortune hunters of the ton. She was raised in Dorsetshire, far from the well-bred life of the season, and she has no interest in staying in town. She’s only in London because she has three months to snag a fortune, plus the man attached to it, so she and her four younger sisters can pay off her family’s debts and stay in their beloved home. She and her sister Cecily quickly get their feet on the first rung of the social ladder when they arrive, and Kitty employs some quick subterfuge to gain the interest of Archie de Lacy. He may not be the oldest son of his noble family, but he’s still good for “at least eight thousand a year,” and he nearly proposes to her—until his brother, Lord Radcliffe, comes home to put a stop to her conniving. At first she’s furious with Radcliffe, but they come to a mutual understanding, and he agrees to help her make a match with another high-born man who is debt-free and entitled to an allowance. Over several weeks, she and Cecily find their way into one society event after another, even snagging tickets to Almack’s Assembly Rooms, so Radcliffe and Kitty spend more time together as she tries to better understand the men she’s meeting. On the eve of a marriage proposal that could save her family, though, simultaneous family emergencies send Radcliffe off in pursuit of her sister and Kitty in pursuit of his brother, and the aftermath makes it difficult to deny what they have come to mean to each other. Irwin’s debut is charming, if a bit paint-by-numbers, recalling Georgette Heyer and other classics of the genre. In contrast to recent trends in historical romance, the hero and heroine don’t do much more than kiss on the page, and their romance develops quite late in the story; much of the plot focuses more on Kitty and Cecily’s introduction to the layers and intrigues of 1818 London. But it isn’t all Austen-esque; Kitty’s honesty about her aims, and Radcliffe’s acceptance of them, allows the story to suit modern sensibilities without sacrificing too much of the vintage feel.

However, she soon realizes she’ll never be happy appeasing them and finally chooses to follow her artistic dreams in order to lead a more authentic life. Reed, inspired by Essie McVee, the first police officer on the scene, becomes a detective, eventually becoming Essie's partner and close friend. Years later, survivors of the massacre begin to die, and Reed is convinced the deaths are connected—but not even Essie takes him seriously until the killer targets him. Reed is wounded but survives, and suddenly everyone believes him. The cunning psychopath escapes into the ether, armed with money, lots of false identification, and a seething desire for revenge. Taking time to heal, Reed visits Tranquility Island, Maine, his childhood vacation spot, and falls in love with the place. He also meets a charismatic older woman who helps him land the house of his dreams and the position of police chief. Falling in love with her granddaughter, Simone—whom he had been aware of since the tragedy but had never met—seems like fate. Reed settles into his new job and hooks up with the FBI regarding the case, convinced their face-off has frustrated the vengeful killer. As heroic survivors, Reed and Simone are prime targets, and now that they’ve found each other, the stakes are higher than ever. Facing the hunter means fighting for their lives, love, and happiness while silencing the violent echoes of the worst day of their lives. Fascinating characters—Simone's grandmother is a standout—and a sprawling plot that covers a lot of ground yet keeps the reader engaged offer a surprisingly compelling and poignant redemption story that begins with a tragic mass shooting.

A charming, sweet romance highlighting the importance of family.
A former NFL player moves to a small town in Alaska to secure an inheritance.
As children, Xavier Stone and his brothers moved away from Moose Falls, Alaska, with their mother because their parents were getting divorced. They lost touch with their father but not with their paternal grandmother, Hattie, who owns several businesses in Moose Falls, including a tavern and hard cider brewery. An injury has sidelined Xavier’s NFL career and left him in a precarious financial position when Hattie contacts him with an interesting proposition. She is ill and wants to reunite with her grandsons. She asks them to move to Moose Falls for a year to learn how to run Yukon Cider, and at the end of the year, the three brothers will inherit everything. True Everett, the manager of Hattie’s tavern, views the men’s arrival with anxiety. She was hoping to buy the tavern from Hattie, but now she’s worried that she’s missed her opportunity. Xavier can’t understand why True seems to have taken an instant dislike to him, but they can’t deny their attraction to each other. Xavier and True also share a belief in the importance of family. True is the sole guardian of her 9-year-old brother, Jaylen, having gained custody after their parents died in a plane crash. Xavier struggles to forgive his father, also newly arrived in town and looking to reconcile with his sons. Calhoune delivers all the best elements of a small-town romance. The townspeople are charming and quirky, the fractures and rifts in the Stone family are healed, and everyone pulls together to support the romance between Xavier and True. Most conflicts are low stakes and easily resolved.
