Good Sophie Kerr -- and she is dependable for the upper grade rental library and light fiction sale. A trick idea and plot -- amusing -- well done -- enough and not too much of sentiment. An adopted daughter goes on her own in New York -- gets a job which gives her a chance to learn about her own mother -- and is disillusioned when she discovers her to be a vapid, selfish, worldly, unscrupulous woman. Good picture of girl in a variety of jobs, and an original story in her deliberate selection of the work with the detective agency and the unfolding of the seamy side of a life she thought glamorous and romantic. Adventure -- romance -- a modern setting. Serialized in Woman's Home Companion.
