LIST DARKNESS FALL by Sprague de Camp

This is a new venture in the field of past-history fantasy. Ordinarily, when a character in modern times (this one is an archaeologist) is thrust back into a period in the past, his concerns are primarily with romance, and he restrains his impulse to meddle with history. Not so Radway. When he finds himself in 6th century Italy, he manages to support himself and at the same time to change the pace of history, to better communication, to introduce army instruments and strategy ahead of their due course, and to ward off the barbarian invasion and the pending Dark Ages. It is an amusing conception and just enough out of the ordinary to catch attention.
