A loosely related collection of religious poems aimed at self-awareness and betterment.

Topics range from facing the challenges of life with vigor to seeking solace in God. Author Nathan speaks not exclusively of a God claimed by any one religion, however, so a broader readership may find wisdom within these pages. Several lovely images appear, such as the metaphor of water seeping through stone as a representation of how God lives within us. Many verses espouse simplified, familiar life instructions, such as letting go of regret, guilt and anger as the only path to the inner self. A few read like a collection of overly sentimental writing exercises, laced with clichéd wonder at the vastness of the universe and our tiny but meaningful place in it. Readers may at first be uncertain whether to roll their eyes or reread with a more open heart. Other poems show insight and intimacy: “It is only by losing something, / You can start the winning instinct,” suggesting that loss urges us to succeed. The author tackles relevant personal issues—death, identity—but does so approachably. The tone ranges from benevolent to imploring, urging the reader to turn inward prior to gazing outward at the world’s mysteries. The penultimate poem (which has a grammatical error) recommends the reader move forward no matter what: “In you there are stars which is shining and / sparkling.” Some verses are more youthful than wise, but there’s a welcome generosity of spirit.

Sometimes trite and unoriginal; sometimes moving.
