``Nine steel drums sing a soft sweet tune,/While ten boats sleep 'neath a pale island moon'' concludes the fifth (and last) couplet in Garne's handsome book. A square painting illustrates each number; colors are vibrant and pure, compositions clean and simple, forms decoratively stylized. No numerals, but often there are extra things that could be counted. Not essential, but a striking tribute to the island experience. (Picture book. 3-8)
