SEND ME DOWN

Another fictionization of hot jazz, quite different from its predecessors. More graphic, more detailed, perhaps more authentic -- but without the punch that put over Young Man With a Horn. There's plenty of sex -- drink -- reefers and hard language in the story of two youths, brothers, who together symbolize a composite picture of the emergence of swing, of the grind from bottom to top, of hot music as it is lived. It hasn't quite the intensity, the ""feel"" of the music that made the Baker book so unusual. Definitely not for public libraries. And in bookshops, not for either conservatives, or for those who have no taste for the seamy side of modern jazz.
