A New Orleans newsman who grew up under the Long dynasty writes a colorful tragi-comedy of that family and its drastic effect on Louisiana during the past thirty odd years. The story begins with Huey Long's dramatic rise to the governorship and then the senate on a ""share the wealth"" program, discusses his flamboyant and corrupt methods, and recreates that fatal day when the ""Kingfish"" was cut down by bullets from Dr. Weiss' gun. Brother Earl Long's patchwork political career and recent insanity make equally fascinating reading, as does Earl's running fight with his nephew, Senator Russell Long. Out of all that has been written about the Longs in recent years, this book probably covers more factual ground on an American dictatorship than any other. Worth the attention of a wide reading audience.
