THE LAST HORSE

Gradually the horse was being replaced among the Navajo by the inanimate but more efficient pick-up-truck. Only Little No Feather refused to part with his beloved but aging horse, White Star, despite the laughter of other children and the admonishment of parents. For Little No Feather shared secrets with his animal brother which if divulged would only fall as absurdities on the ears of others. When his father arranges to sell White Star, the boy and horse escape into the mountains where they reencounter the savage mountain lion whom White Star courageously defeats. The story reveals in poetic terms both the traditional relationship between Navajo and horse and White Star's dramatic role as the last of the wild horses who proudly roamed the lands of western America.
