Military history, and not too technical, is this intensive account of the Western theatre of the Civil War, written with such vitality that its market extends well beyond the federate student or military analyst. Mile by mile, day by day, he covers the story, the personalities, the engagements. A record of handicaps in lack of supplies, professional jealosics, defeat. Not the herotic side of the war, but everyday soldiering not confined to a particular era in its implications. The personalities involved (, Brigg, Stewart etc.), the human element. The author has come to grips with a mass of research and transformed it into vivid reading. A good job.
