BEETHOVEN

A sophisticated little volume which will only be within the reach of those who have a knowledge of composers and musical styles and a moderate amount of interpretive and technical ability at the keyboard. Mr. Sadie tries to show the composer's personality as reflected in his music; examples in the text are drawn from Beethoven's better-known works--sonatas, symphonies, quartets--and are all scored for piano. Biographical material is fast-moving and succinct. Attractive photographs and line drawings depict such items of interest as Beethoven's hearing trumpets and his musical handwriting. Unique among juvenile studies for its musical maturity.
