The whoop-it-up era of a frontier, pioneer town is given colorful portrayal as its years are closely chronicled. From its military days as Fort Dodge, through the stories of the Indian fighters and frontiersmen and scouts, on to the coming of the mule skinners, gamblers, railroaders, merchants, gunfighters and marshals, it is a swaggering, sometimes wicked, often heroic tale. For the old rough days produced their own drama whether it had to do with the big trail drives, or the Dull Knife Raid, or the excitement of the dance halls and their notorious women, or the adventures of horse thieves and vigilantes. And there are the famous marshals -- Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp -- and fame of Luke Short. Here are guns and long horns, scoundrels and sinners, the loss of the open range and the eventual loss of a doublebarrelled reputation. For that market which likes its West factual, this is the dish.
