In this first of the Disney Fairies graphic-novel series set in Never Land, four short stories star the invincible Tinker Bell of Peter Pan fame as well as other fairy characters introduced in Gail Carson Levine’s Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg (2005) and Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand (2007). Fairy Prilla uses her special talent to rescue a new fairy and outwit the nasty fairy Vidia in the initial two vignettes, while in the final stories Tinker Bell wields her own talent to save the Bluebell Festival but wonders why her best pal Rani avoids her. Despite many visual cues, the abbreviated comic-book–style text and format offer minimal plot and character development, and readers may find the tiny, overlapping multiple frames jam-packed with an abundance of fairy activity and background detail hard to follow. Burdened with Technicolor cuteness, this graphic version of the Disney fairies pales in comparison to Levine’s more imaginative novels. Fairy dust embedded into the cover, however, provides a fetching touch. (Graphic fantasy. 6-10)
