John Clark has taken early retirement from British Telecommunication so that he can get a payoff of Å’16,000, most of which he's loaned to a vanished lady friend he wants lesbian p.i. Saz Martin to trace--no mean feat, since he doesn't know her name or address or anything else about her. Meantime, standup comic Maggie Simpson has taken up with a new lover, the Woman with the Kelly McGillis Body, who's obviously Saz's quarry--though Saz won't find that out until she's followed in her footsteps as a hostess at a New York establishment called Calendar Girls. Eventually the two halves of this girls-only story come together, to no great effect. Duffy's first is flip, sassy, and fashionably underplotted.
