GREECE CHOSE FREEDOM

The position of Greece today is puzzling to many Americans. This first-hand report of Greece's struggle for freedom during nine grim years within our memory will deepen our understanding. The period covered goes from October 1940 when Italy attacked Greece with the conviction that three months would complete the conquest, to August 1949 when Greek Communism failed in its third attempt to seize control. In his post as liaison between Greek and British armies and later as a representative in Greece of several European newspapers, the author unrolls these nine years under Fascism, Nazism, Communism--sometimes intense nationalism was triumphant; always under the Germans, the independent spirit was dominant as the defeated Greeks went underground. Within the forces of Communism, there were splits, resistance to outside controls, intrigue which proved self-defeating. Three times the Communist forces attempted to seize power; UN and American aid--stepping into the gap when the British pulled out--strengthened the government forces against divisive forces of civil war. Today Greece is suffering from loss of political, social and economic equilibrium. Mr. Zotos, writing pre-coup, posits Communism as a still active force, and the deep rift as a factor in today's disturbance. His presence personalizes the study.
